Windows
Arabic Phonetic Keyboard Layout uses the Windows built-in Language and Keyboard feature to introduce a new Keyboard for the Arabic (Saudi Arabia) Language. Once you run the installer and reboot, you will notice a new keyboard is added to the language list.
The keyboard Layout is created using Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator.
You can download the Keyboard Layout file and customize it as you like.
How is it better than others?
It uses the research done by the Intellaren group to make most frequently pressed keys easily accessible through regular keys, without pressing Shift or AltGr (Ctrl+Alt).
Most forms of Alif and Hamza are easily accessible. Press A for ا, Shift A for أ, P for ٱ, Shift P for آ, G for ء
Other keys are Phonetic. For ex, S for س, Shift S for ش, D for د, Shift D for ض, J for ذ, Shift J for ج
Optimized for typing Vowels.
Step 1: Extract the zip file. Run the setup.exe file from the extracted folder, not from the zip file. Do not open the zip file and run the setup.exe from inside the zip file.
Install Arabic Language
Step 2: Reboot. Important, without this you don't always see the new Arabic Language and the keyboard appearing in next step.
Step 3: You will see a new Language is added in the language bar. Select Arabic as the language and you are ready to type Arabic.
That's it, start typing.
If you are using Windows 8, then it is even easier. Just press Windows Key + Space to switch between languages and keyboards.
Note:
You might already have Arabic language installed. In that case, right click on the Language icon and click Settings.
Then on the settings diaglog, select the 'Arabic Phonetic Keyboard Layout' and click 'Move Up' to make it the first item under Arabic.
MacOS
Step 1:Download the Arabic Phonetic Keyboard bundle as a zip file.
Step 2: Open the zip file. You will find a file named 'Arabic Phonetic.bundle'
Step 3: Copy the file.
Step 4: Press Command+Shift+G
Step 5: Put ~/Library/Keyboard Layouts
Step 6: Paste the file inside that folder.
Step 7: Now go to System Preference -> Keyboard -> Input Sources and add the Arabic Phonetic keyboard.
You can customize the Keyboard Layout by modifying the Ukelele file.
You need Ukelele software to modify it.
Tajweed Symbols are available through Ctrl+Alt combination or pressing the AltGr key (if you have it on your keyboard).
Arabic Romanized Keyboard
Want to type ā ū ṭ Ṭ ḍ Ḍ ḥ Ḥ ẓ Ẓ ‘ ’ ʿ ’ easily? Install this English keyboard and then press Option + key to get the Romanized version
Option + a = ā
Option + s = ṣ
Option + Shift + a = á
Option + ' = ‘
Option + [ = ʿ
Option + ] = ʾ
Download the keyboard file and follow the same steps as above to get the keyboard installed.
It will be available in the Keyboard system preference Input Sources, under English language named 'British - Arabic Romanized'.
Activating Keyboards and the Language Bar in Windows
First, activate the keyboards or input methods that you want through the Control Panel:
- Click on the Start button > Control Panel > Clock, Language, and Region > Region and Language.
- Click the Keyboards and Languages tab, and then click Change keyboards.
- Under Installed services, click Add.
- Double-click the language you want to add, double-click 'Keyboard,' and select the options you want. Then click OK.
Next, turn on the Language Bar:
- While you still have the 'Text Services and Input Languages' window open (or open again following steps 1-2 above), click on the Language Bar tab.
- Make sure the 'Docked in the taskbar' option is selected. Click OK to close all control panel windows open.

Use the Language Bar to select which language you want to type in:

- The Language Bar should now appear in the lower-right corner of your computer screen.
- Click on the 2-letter language abbreviation (e.g., EN for English), then select the language you want from the menu.
- Some languages have multiple keyboard options. After you select the language, click the small keyboard icon to select further options.
When using another keyboard layout, open the On-Screen Keyboard to see what characters are associated with each key:

- Click the Start button > All Programs > Accessories > Ease of Access. (In Windows XP, it's called Accessibility.)
- Then click On-Screen Keyboard to open the On-Screen Keyboard.
- The On-Screen Keyboard will show you what letters are associated with each key. You can type the letters with your keyboard, or you can click on the letters on the screen.
- When you press/click Shift, Ctrl, Alt, etc., you'll see what new characters can be typed by using these combination keys.
